FAQs

About

At Nuro, we’re committed to redefining helmet safety with technology rooted in science. Our FAQ page is designed to provide quick and clear answers to your most common questions about our products, technology, and mission. Whether you’re curious about how Nuro works, what sets us apart, or how to choose the right helmet, you’ll find everything you need right here.

Is WaveCel and Nuro the same thing?

Yes, the WaveCel company is now rebranded Nuro. We’ve changed our company name to better align with our mission and product vision. You will continue to see Nuro’s WaveCel product line in cycling and snowsports.

What is brain torque? Why is it harmful?

The main cause of brain injury is not direct force, it’s brain torque. To understand brain torque, picture a boxer being punched. It’s not direct impact from the punch that damages the brain – it’s the rotation of the head. The hidden damage occurs when the skull spins around the brain. Even just a small amount of torque to the brain can cause serious brain injury.

For an illustration of the harmful effects of rotational acceleration, check out the egg video.

Are WaveCel / Nuro helmets currently available? If so, where?

Yes, WaveCel helmets are currently available on the market. They are featured in various helmet models, including those from Trek and Bontrager, and Burton’s Anon line, and can be purchased through these authorized retailers.

Additionally, Nuro technology has been incorporated into Hardknock safety helmets for construction and other industries, offering enhanced protection against impacts and falls. Hardknock helmets will be available for purchase online.

What if I crashed my Nuro helmet?

In a crash, Nuro is designed to absorb shock by partial deformation of the shell and liner. This damage may not always be visible. Therefore, if subjected to a crash or damaged, the helmet should be replaced.

Is there an Nuro insert for my existing helmet?

Unfortunately, a standard helmet cannot be retrofitted to accommodate Nuro. In order to provide the exceptional level of protection, a helmet must be specifically engineered to work with Nuro technology.

How do I clean my helmet?

Cleaning a helmet with the Nuro Brain Protection System is no different than cleaning a standard foam helmet. The Nuro Core can be washed with a solution of mild soap and water. Avoid chemicals and solvents that can damage the helmet. Lightly wash using a soft cloth and allow your helmet to air dry in an open area. For long-term care, store your helmet a cool, dry place when it’s not in use. Avoid excessive high-heat environments that can damage the liner or shell. Do not attempt to remove the Nuro Core, doing so may result in damage to the helmet and void of product warranties.

Does Nuro affect helmet ventilation?

The Nuro Core is 93% porous, meaning that air can freely flow through 93% of its surface – making it remarkably cool and breathable.

What is the lifespan of a Nuro helmet?

Every helmet has a limited lifespan in use and should be replaced when it shows obvious signs of wear and tear. Nuro helmets have the same lifespan as a standard foam helmet. Most helmet manufacturers recommend replacing a helmet after three years, however a helmet should always be replaced if it has been damaged or has been involved in a crash.

Does Nuro affect the fit of the helmet? How do I find the right size?

The Nuro Core forms a flexible dome that naturally conforms to the head shape. Nuro helmets come in a variety of sizes and are consistent with helmet sizing standards.

Does Nuro make any other protective gear?

Currently, Nuro only makes technology for helmets. You’ll find the Nuro Brain Protection System in helmets for cycling (Trek and Bontrager), snow sports (Anon), and construction (Hardknock). Helmets for additional sporting categories will be released in the future.

Will Nuro technology protect me from concussion?

Independent tests at Virginia Tech University document that Nuro’s WaveCel product line achieves the highest possible safety rating. However, no helmet, including helmets equipped with Nuro technology, can protect the wearer from all injuries.

What makes Nuro stand apart from other helmet safety technologies?

Unlike basic slip liners, the innovative Nuro Core is designed to react to each unique incident and intelligently adapt its shape depending on any angle of impact. No other protection technology can do this. No other method is as effective at reducing the risk of concussion and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

How do I choose the right helmet?

Choosing the right helmet depends on your activity and fit needs. Start by selecting a helmet designed for your specific use, such as cycling, snow sports, or construction. Ensure the helmet fits snugly without pinching, sits level on your head, and doesn’t move when adjusted. Look for safety features like Nuro’s Brain Protection System that provide protection against both linear and rotational forces. Prioritize comfort, ventilation, and compliance with safety standards for the best combination of protection and wearability.
